TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The best weather for viewing this year's supermoon during the Mid-Autumn Festival is forecast to be in central and southern Taiwan on Tuesday (Sept. 17), while the east will be the least ideal due to rain.
Central Weather Administration (CWA) forecaster Chu Mei-lin (朱美霖) said on Tuesday the east is expected to see rain, per CNA. Greater Taipei may also experience scattered showers, while areas south of Taoyuan will mainly see afternoon thunderstorms in the mountains.
Chu said that areas south of Hsinchu, including Penghu and Kinmen, have better opportunities for moon viewing, while from Taoyuan and areas north and Matsu will be mostly cloudy. Clouds in the east will reduce the chances of seeing the moon.
According to the Taipei Astronomical Museum, the full moon on Tuesday will be a supermoon and the largest seen on the Mid-Autumn Festival since 2015. Though the actual full moon of the lunar calendar’s eighth month falls at 10:34 a.m. on Tuesday, at night is still the best time to enjoy the moon.
As the Moon at that time will be less than 360,000 km away from Earth, it qualifies as a supermoon. At 6:22 p.m., Saturn will be in conjunction with the Moon, with the two appearing only 0.3 degrees apart in the sky, marking the only time in the 21st century the two will appear together on the Mid-Autumn Festival.
