TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Around 500 people participated in the “March for Taiwan” in Manhattan on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 14).
Organized by the NGO Keep Taiwan Free, the march called for Taiwan's inclusion in the UN, CNA reported. Taiwanese expats, students, and supporters gathered in front of the Chinese consulate in Midtown Manhattan before heading towards Times Square.
Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Chang Ya-Ling (張雅琳) and Taiwan People's Party Legislator Wu Chun-Cheng (吳春城) led the march. Participants chanted slogans like "Keep Taiwan Free" and "UN for Taiwan."
The 79th UN General Assembly began on Sept. 10. This year's theme focuses on peace, sustainable development, and human dignity. Taiwan's representative office in New York will promote a "Global Solidarity for Peace" campaign, urging international support for Taiwan's participation in global affairs.
Tom Chih-chiang Lee (李志強), director-general of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in New York, said the goal this year is to help the international community understand the content of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758. He called on the UN to find a way to include Taiwan and allow it to contribute to sustainable development goals.
TECO New York also deployed a "Taiwan Peace Truck” on Saturday for a “Chip in with Taiwan” pop-up event to help people understand Taiwan’s technological contributions. Representatives from the allied nations of Belize, Paraguay, and Tuvalu accompanied Lee to launch the event.
“Producing over 60% of the world’s semiconductors, Taiwan provides a helping hand to many nations through its advanced technology, enhancing public health, women's empowerment, green energy, agriculture, and public health,” the representative office said in a Facebook post.
