TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Four Chinese coast guard ships approached a restricted area near Kinmen for the second day in a row on Saturday (Sept. 14).
A radar tracked the vessels near restricted waters at 8:50 a.m., leading the Coast Guard Administration (CGA) to dispatch four of its patrol boats to the area. Similar to an incident Friday (Sept. 13) morning, each Coast Guard ship shadowed a Chinese vessel and broadcast warnings in Mandarin and English, Radio Taiwan International reported.
The Chinese ships left the area about two hours after they arrived. The incident was the second of its kind in September, coming just one day after the first, and the 40th of the year.
The Coast Guard accused China of acting against the spirit of next week’s Mid-Autumn Festival, a major holiday on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. The Sept. 17 holiday should be an occasion for families to get together, not for provocative actions by China to disrupt peace and stability, according to the Coast Guard.
