TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan took home 15 awards at R&D 100 Awards this year, the most out of any Asian country.
According to a Ministry of Economic Affairs press release Wednesday (Sept. 11), 13 of the recipients received funding from the ministry. The awardees are as follows:
- Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI): 8 awards
- Institute for Information Industry (III): 3 awards
- Taiwan Textile Research Institute (TTRI): 3 awards
- Metal Industries Research and Development Center (MIRDC): 1 award
Announced on Aug. 8, the winners were selected based on their contributions to science and technology. A panel of 56 industry professionals determined the results.
Economics Minister Kuo Jyh-huei (郭智輝) said this year many award-winning technologies supported by the ministry have seen a 90% technology transfer rate to companies, per CNA.
For instance, ITRI’s collaboration with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) on 3D AI chips reduces power consumption by 90% and increases data speeds by eight times, he said.
Another example is ITRI’s carbon capture and utilization technology, which is in field testing with Chimei Corporation and can potentially reduce carbon emissions by 178,500 tons annually, Kuo added.
The ministry said it will continue to support research and work closely with industry to enhance Taiwan’s international competitiveness.
