TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s government will invest NT$1.4 billion (US$45.3 million) on art history projects between 2025 and 2028 that will include preparations for a new national art museum, the Cabinet said on Thursday (Sept. 12).
The money allocated by the Cabinet is a continuation of a 2018 plan to promote Taiwan’s art history development, per CNA. The funds will be spent on the collection, promotion, and study of fine art, music, literature, architecture, Taiwanese opera, and other art forms.
The Ministry of Culture will also use part of the investment to set up a preparatory office for the planned Tainan National Art Museum. Deputy Culture Minister Lee Ching-hwi (李靜慧) said the office will be established in March 2025 and plan for a museum that will feature prominent Taiwanese artists from past generations.
Lee said the development of other art forms will be promoted via institutions such as the Taiwan Traditional Theater Center, and the National Museum of Taiwan Literature, an architecture museum set to open in 2026.
Plans to develop Taiwan’s art history are expected to engage local artists with central government decision-makers to better understand the context of Taiwan’s modern art, the Cabinet said. The culture ministry will also work with the National Science and Technology Council to use AI to promote Taiwan’s art history internationally.
