TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Sun Moon Lake in central Taiwan is gearing up for its annual swimming event, which is expected to draw more than 50,000 people to its shores.
Over 22,600 people have signed up for the 3 kilometer swim which will be held on Sunday (Sept. 15), according to the local government. The event allows members of the public who sign up in advance to swim across Taiwan's largest lake, which is prohibited during the rest of the year.
Sign up for the event closed on July. 8, and police said Wednesday (Sept. 11) that traffic controls will be put in place on the day to manage the influx of vehicles, per UDN. From 6 a.m. Saturday, vehicles will only be allowed to travel in a clockwise direction around the lake, police said.
This means vehicles entering the Sun Moon Lake area from Toushe Village will be required to first head toward Shuishe Pier in Yuchi Township where there is a parking lot, and where the swim begins. Those entering from the Jiulong Intersection will be required to travel first toward Ita Thao, where the swim ends.
Shuttle buses will be available to transport visitors between these locations. Police also reminded the public to park legally to avoid creating traffic jams, and to remove any valuables from their vehicles to prevent theft.
