TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Central Weather Administration (CWA) forecaster Chen Pei-an (陳姵安) said the 14th tropical depression of the year formed at 2 a.m. Tuesday (Sept. 10) and could potentially intensify into Tropical Storm Bebinca.
Chen said the forecasted storm path is currently north of Taiwan passing over the Ryukyu Islands and could bring heavy rain over the weekend. In addition, a low-pressure belt could lead to the formation of other tropical storms, per ETtoday.
Should Tropical Storm Bebinca form, it will be the 13th tropical storm of the year.
Chen said low-pressure systems would increase the chance of heavy rainfall and intermittent showers in the north and northeast. Central and southern Taiwan will experience significant cloudiness and sporadic rain in mountainous areas.
Beginning on Friday, there could be localized showers or thunderstorms in northern and eastern Taiwan. The chance of heavy rain is expected to continue throughout the weekend.
Chen said the storm's current path will require more observation over the next three to four days to determine its effect on Taiwan.
Furthermore, Chen said a large low-pressure belt in the Pacific Ocean has increased the chance of tropical storms. Chen said that such conditions could lead to the formation of two more tropical storms.
