TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Canadian Representative to Taiwan Jim Nickel highlighted Taiwan’s important role as a key partner in Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy during a meeting with Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) on Monday (Sept. 9).
Nickel said both countries share common values, such as democracy and the rule of law, according to a Cabinet press release. The two countries also work together to uphold a rules-based international order and safeguard peace and stability in the region, he said.
To strengthen democratic and communications resilience, Canada wants to deepen cooperation with Taiwan in combating disinformation, countering foreign interference, and enhancing cybersecurity, Nickel said. Canada has also stressed its opposition to unilateral attempts to change the status quo in the Taiwan Strait through coercion or force.
The representative pointed out that Canada and Taiwan have adopted the Collaborative Framework on Supply Chains Resilience, which allows for collaboration in key high-tech areas such as clean and renewable energy, semiconductors, and advanced manufacturing.
Canada is also honored to invest in Taiwan’s offshore wind industry, contributing to its net-zero goals, Nickel said.
Cho said that aside from economic and trade exchanges, Canadian lawmakers frequently visit Taiwan, and youth exchanges are also recurrent. Every year, both sides offer 1,000 working holiday visas to young people to foster mutual learning, according to the premier.
Cho added that the two nations will continue to collaborate and support each other in maintaining regional peace and security.
