TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck east Taiwan at 1:16 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 7), the Central Weather Administration (CWA) reported.
The quake’s epicenter was 16.4 kilometers east-southeast of Hualien County Hall, with a focal depth of 15.1 km.
The quake’s biggest intensity level reached level 4 in parts of Hualien County, and level 3 in parts of Yilan County and Nantou County. Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7, which gauges the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location.
The tremor was the third quake of the day Saturday, with a magnitude 4.8 quake recorded near Hualien County at 5:28 a.m., and a magnitude 3.3 tremor at 7:25 a.m. near Yilan County.
Since a magnitude 7.2 quake hit Hualien County on April 3, more than 1,000 aftershocks have hit the region.
