TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taichung is preparing to host the Red Bull Showrun racing event later this month, with the city organizing a robust security operation to ensure the safety of guests and residents.
On Friday (Sept. 6), Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) conducted a site inspection and held a press conference on Shizheng Rd., where the event will be held. Lu stated that the event will see one of the largest and most sophisticated security operations in the city’s history, according to UDN.
Red Bull Showrun Taichung, scheduled for Sept. 28 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., is the only premier Red Bull-sponsored event in Asia to feature Formula 1 division race cars. Tickets went on sale in mid-August, and all 30,000 were sold within hours.
In preparation for the event, Taichung police are organizing special teams to manage the large and energetic crowds expected to gather. Over 1,500 security personnel will be on duty, drawn from five Taichung police precincts, with teams specializing in anti-terrorism, threat management, and traffic and crowd control.
In addition to deploying a fleet of armored vehicles, police will be equipped with anti-drone radio wave rifles to disable unauthorized drones entering the airspace over the event. Mayor Lu said this will be the largest police force in the city’s history to manage a single event.
Traffic control measures will be implemented along a 2.2-kilometer stretch of Shizheng Rd. starting on the evening of Sept. 25, with access restricted through 10 p.m. on Sept. 28 (see graphic below).
