TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA) predicts the weather will be “extremely hot” in the north on Friday (Sept. 6), while heavy rain is likely in central and southern areas in the afternoon.
The CWA said north of Taoyuan temperatures may exceed 37 C, per CNA. In the afternoon, there will be short and localized thunderstorms, with a chance of heavy rain in central and southern regions, and mountainous areas.
Although Typhoon Yagi is headed toward southern China and Vietnam, the CWA said moisture levels remain high. Penghu County, Kinmen County, and Lienchiang County will see partly cloudy to sunny skies.
The weather bureau said temperatures nationwide will range between 33 and 36 C. It issued an orange heat alert for Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, and Hsinchu for highs hitting 36 C for three straight days.
The CWA described daytime conditions in Keelung, Taipei, Hsinchu, and Hsinchu County as “extremely hot.” Temperatures will remain high in the late afternoon, and the public is advised to wear sunscreen and drink plenty of water when venturing outdoors.
A yellow heat advisory has been issued for Changhua County, Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung for highs of 36 C.
In addition, before Sunday (Sept. 8), there is a chance of large waves along the southern coast, Hengchun Peninsula, and the coastlines of Penghu County, Orchid Island, and Green Island.
