TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) said Thursday (Sept. 5) the decision to detain former Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) was based on “speculation."
Taipei District Court determined that Ko may have broken the Anti-Corruption Act in the Core Pacific City development case. He was detained without bail and visitation rights on Thursday afternoon.
The TPP said that since Aug. 30, when prosecutors searched Ko’s residence, office, and TPP headquarters, he had been treated unfairly by the judiciary, per CNA. During the search prosecutors exceeded their scope and fabricated charges, they argued.
The TPP added the court’s ruling did not present any evidence of bribery or illegal money flows. The judge said that such evidence still needs to be investigated by the prosecutors.
The party called on the judiciary to adhere to the principles of fairness rather than prosecuting Ko on speculation and biased evidence.
Further details about the court’s ruling are to be announced.
