TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Although Tropical Storm Yagi (摩羯) is not predicted to land in Taiwan, it is expected to bring showers to the north, east, and south on Tuesday (Sept. 3).
Yagi is currently over Luzon, the Philippines, heading west-northwest at 8 km/h with 72 km/h sustained winds and gusts up to 100 km/h, reported the Central Weather Administration.
Meteorologist Lin Te-en (林得恩), head of National Taiwan University's Center for Weather and Climate Disaster Research, said Yagi is preparing to turn into the South China Sea toward China's Hainan Island, with the potential to strengthen into a mid-level typhoon.
Lin said Yagi is currently making landfall in the Philippines, causing severe flooding and landslides, which have displaced over 20,000 people, with the death toll rising to 11.
Yagi's movement will be slow from Tuesday until Thursday, averaging speeds of 10 km/h or less, predicted Lin.
Lin added that on Tuesday, due to the influence of Yagi's outer circulation, areas such as Keelung's north coast, Greater Taipei, the east, and the Hengchun Peninsula will experience mostly cloudy weather with occasional showers. Southern and southeastern coastal areas, as well as Penghu, will also experience strong wind gusts and large waves, said Lin.
Lin advised the public to exercise caution when engaging in maritime activities.
