TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 5.5 earthquake rocked east Taiwan at 4:26 p.m. on Monday (Sept. 2), according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).
No injuries or damage from the earthquake were reported as of publication. Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7, which gauges the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location.
The quake’s intensity registered a 4 in Hualien County and Nantou County. An intensity level of 3 was recorded in Yilan County, Taichung, and Changhua County.
An intensity level of 2 was reported in Taitung County, Taoyuan, Miaoli County, Chiayi County, Hsinchu County, Yunlin County, New Taipei, and Chiayi. An intensity level of 1 was measured in Hsinchu, Taipei, Kaohsiung, Tainan, and Penghu County.
The CWA said its epicenter was 8.5 km southeast of Hualien County Hall, with a 23.9 km focal depth.
