TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The UK will help Taiwan join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, UK Representative John Dennis said on Tuesday (Sept. 2).
As the UK is set to become a full member of the organization in December, it will share its experience and assist Taiwan in joining, Dennis said during a meeting with Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰), CNA reported. He also pledged to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the Atlantic and Indo-Pacific.
The representative said the UK and Taiwan collaborate across key sectors to increase resilience and address challenges. He said the UK supports Taiwan's meaningful participation in international organizations.
Dennis pointed out that the bilateral relationship is built on mutual respect and shared democratic values. In recent years, cooperation has expanded in areas such as energy, net-zero transition, and bilingual education, he said.
The representative said that the UK and Taiwan will sign a memorandum of understanding on exporting organic products to Taiwan. He cited this as a small example of the tangible results that will emerge from the deepening Taiwan-UK relationship.
Taiwan submitted its CPTPP application on September 22, 2021, just one week after China applied. Taipei has called on its allies including the US and UK to help facilitate its ascension into the organization.
