TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tropical Storm Yagi (摩羯) is expected to travel south of Taiwan, but could bring showers later in the week.
On Monday (Sept. 2), meteorologist Daniel Wu (吳德榮) said Yagi became the 11th tropical storm of the year on Sunday. The Central Weather Administration (CWA) released a map of the storm's projected path showing it entering the South China Sea.
Wu said modeling shows the storm has a below 20% chance of directly affecting Taiwan, but more monitoring is recommended.
Wu said it would be sunny and hot on Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 3). Wu advised those venturing outside to take precautions against sun exposure and heatstroke.
On Monday and Tuesday, Wu said there would be occasional localized afternoon thunderstorms in mountainous areas of central and southern Taiwan. Wu said on Monday it would range between 24 to 38 C in the north, 24 to 36 C in central Taiwan, 24 to 36 in the south, and 23 to 37 in the east.
On Wednesday and Thursday, Wu forecasted brief showers in the east. Wu predicted the west would be sunny to partly cloudy with localized thunderstorms in the middle of the country and south in the afternoons.
The east will experience localized showers Friday to Sunday, and the west will have localized afternoon thunderstorms, with a chance of heavy thunderstorms in some areas, said Wu.
