TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A red carpet event and world premiere were held for the action movie "Weekend in Taipei" at the Xinyi Vieshow Cinema Plaza in Taipei on Sunday (Sept. 1).
The event was attended by French writer, director, and producer, Luc Besson, who contributed the screenplay for the film; director George Huang (黃嘉智); and actors Gwei Lun-mei (桂綸鎂), Sung Kang, and Wyatt Yang (楊明偉). Besson was also accompanied by his wife Virginie Besson-Silla, per CNA.
Before the film’s world premiere, a red carpet event attracted thousands of fans who turned out for the opportunity to interact with the cast and crew of the film. The film will debut later this month on Sept. 25.

Sung Kang was the first star to walk the red carpet. He patiently signed autographs and posed for photos with fans, spending 30 minutes on the red carpet. Kang is known to many fans as the character "Han,” which he portrays in the film franchise “Fast & Furious.”
For this film, however, he diverges from his role as an impossibly cool Asian heartthrob for that of a ruthless drug lord. Kang said he enjoyed playing a bad guy in the film, allowing him to experience a wider range of emotions and joy.
Taiwanese actress Gwei Lun-mei was the next to walk the red carpet, wearing a beautiful Chanel dress. She also posed for photos and took the time to sign autographs.

Gwei said she was very happy the entire film was shot in Taipei. "I was very happy to work with familiar streets and alleys and work with the producer and director to present a different side of Taipei."
While the male lead in the film, Luke Evans was not present at the event, he specially recorded a video message to fans.
"Hello, Taiwan! I am Luke Evans. I am very happy that the world premiere of this film will be held in Taipei, one of my favorite cities. I really want to spend this evening with you, but unfortunately, it is difficult to adjust the shooting schedule. I hope the event will be a complete success," said Evans in a recorded message.
