TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) condemned China's military expansion and claims following two days of meetings between US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi (王毅).
On Thursday (Aug. 29), MOFA said China's post-meeting readout made “spurious claims about Taiwan that do not accord with reality.” It also “strongly condemned these false narratives” and stressed that Taiwan is not subordinate to China.
The ministry said China's intimidation and suppression of Taiwan and its “naked ambition for military expansion” pose a major risk to peace and stability in the region.
MOFA said China is jeopardizing transatlantic security by being Russia's key backer in its war with Ukraine. The ministry said this partnership with Moscow demonstrates that Beijing's ambitions stretch past Taiwan to other regions, making it a “major global threat.”
The ministry pointed out that China's “malicious actions” have heightened concern among democratic nations worldwide.
MOFA pledged that Taiwan will continue to bolster its defenses and coordinate with the US and other like-minded countries to “safeguard the rules-based international order and preserve peace, stability, and prosperity across the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific.”
Following talks between Sullivan and Wang on Aug. 27 and 28, the White House issued a statement pointing out that Sullivan had emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. According to China's Foreign Ministry, Wang stressed to Sullivan that “Taiwan belongs to China” with unification inevitable and said “Taiwan independence is the biggest risk to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.”
