TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taiwan branch of Alcon has recalled over 300 boxes of its daily disposable contact lenses for causing eye irritation.
The Food and Drug Administration's latest medical device recall alert on Wednesday (Aug. 28) said Alcon's factory discovered quality issues with the materials used in some contact lenses, which may cause temporary problems such as stinging and red eyes, per ETtoday.
This issue affects three types of daily disposable contact lenses, including two types that have been imported domestically: "Alcon Dailies Total1 for Astigmatism" and "Alcon Dailies Total1 Multifocal."
A total of 11 batches are affected and must be recalled by Sept. 13.
The FDA said Alcon found a quality issue with materials supplied by a third-party vendor. These materials were only used in batches produced at a single manufacturing site.
According to the FDA, Alcon has initiated a voluntary recall of the affected product batches to protect customer and consumer rights.
Wearing the lenses may cause temporary issues. However, symptoms will subside after the lenses are removed or replaced.
The FDA said 306 boxes of the affected models/batches were imported into Taiwan. The Taiwan branch of Alcon began notifying customers to stop using the affected products on Aug. 13 and aims to complete the recall by Sept. 13, 2024.
