TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taijiang National Park is implementing traffic control measures on surrounding roads to allow egg-bearing female crabs to safely cross and release their young near the coastline during breeding season.
According to the park, more than 5,000 female land crabs have been assisted this year, ensuring a successful breeding season, per CNA. Land crabs are most active from June to November, as each month's full moon draws them out for feeding and they release larvae into the sea.
For this reason, traffic measures will be in effect from 6:30–9:30 p.m. on Sept.19-21. Park officials urged the public to avoid driving on coastal roads during this time and to heed police traffic control measures to protect the precious crabs.
In addition to traffic operations, members of the Seventh Special Police Corps, along with volunteers, are conducting nightly patrols to land crab hotspots for their safety.
