TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) is scheduled to announce the official design aesthetics for the nation's National Day in a press conference on Sept. 3.
Legislative speakers are responsible for planning the Double Ten Day celebration. The planning committee will unveil the main visual design for the celebration, CNA reported.
Some legislators have expressed concerns, hoping to avoid a return to former aesthetics reminiscent of the Kuomintang (KMT).
People familiar with the matter revealed that Han has emphasized the importance of hosting a grand celebration for the event. KMT caucus secretary-general Hung Mong-kai (洪孟楷) noted that highlighting the ROC’s symbolic meaning is appropriate and a means to restore clarity.
Democratic Progressive Party caucus whip Wu Szu-yao (吳思瑤) said the party would respect Han’s celebration plans. Wu hoped Han would continue promoting the celebration to reflect Taiwan’s identity.
Under previous speakers, celebrations have emphasized the coexistence of "Republic of China (ROC)” and "Taiwan," Wu said. The public has reached a consensus on Taiwan's identity, and the National Day celebrations have highlighted the concept of "ROC in Taiwan," she said.
Double Ten Day marks the beginning of the Wuchang Uprising on Oct. 10, 1911, which eventually led to the end of the Qing dynasty.
