TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Typhoon Shanshan brewed in Pacific Ocean waters north of Taiwan on Saturday (Aug. 24), while the weather bureau warned of extreme heat in Tainan and Pingtung counties, and high ultraviolet levels nationally.
NHK World reported the "strong" typhoon is expected to near eastern Japan on Tuesday. However, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said it was unlikely to affect Taiwan apart from possible lingering light winds and rain.
On Saturday afternoon the CWA issued an alert warning of “heavy rainfall and flash floods” in Hsinchu County, Taichung City, and Pingtung County. It said to take care in mountainous areas and avoid watersides.
The bureau also issued orange signal warnings for Tainan City and Pingtung County, as temperatures had hit 36 C on three consecutive days. There were yellow signals for New Taipei City, Miaoli County, Changhua County, Kaohsiung City, and Taitung County. This means maximum temperatures as high as 36 C.
The CWA registered extreme Ultra Violet Index (UVI) levels of 11 for the East Coast, with a mix of 10 and 9 (very high) for the rest of the country.
Looking forward, CWA forecast this pattern of temperatures above 30 C and showers, mainly in the afternoon, is likely to continue through next week.
