TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — More than 400 lightning strikes occurred within one minute in northern Taiwan on Friday afternoon (Aug. 23), according to WeatherRisk.
WeatherRisk posted on Facebook just before 4 p.m. that its lightning monitoring systems had recorded the strikes alongside heavy rain. The Central Weather Administration’s (CWA) lightning monitoring system showed the highest lightning strike concentration in the north occurred after 3 p.m.
The CWA also issued heavy rain advisories on Friday afternoon for northern Taiwan and extremely heavy rain advisories for parts of Hsinchu’s east and Hualien. Heavy rain advisories are also in place along the central mountain range.
