TAIPEI (Taiwan News) —Kuei-Shan Elementary, representing the Asia-Pacific region at the 2024 Little League Baseball (LLB) World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, won its third consecutive game, defeating Cuba 10-2 on Monday (Aug. 19).
Right from the start of the game, Kuei-Shan was presented with many opportunities to score, though left the bases loaded in the top half of the first inning. Cuba wasted no time, stringing together base hits to put two runs across in the bottom of the first inning, putting them up 0-2.
In the top of the fourth inning, a number of fielding and throwing errors allowed Kuei-Shan Elementary to put its first runs across. However, a quick recovery on an overthrow led a Kuei-Shan runner to be thrown out at the plate, per UDN.
Kuei-Shan would be given a chance to give themselves an insurmountable lead in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and right fielder Chiu Wei-che (邱唯喆) at the plate with no outs. He swung mightily at a high fastball, sending the baseball high into the air and just clearing the fence in right-centerfield for a grand slam.
After rounding the bases, Chiu stomped on home plate, giving his team a 6-2 lead.
In the sixth and final inning (LLB games end after six innings, though extra innings are played in case of a tie), Kuei-Shan would capitalize on several walks and put across insurance runs, extending their lead with a final score of 10-2.
Kuei-Shan Elementary earned its third consecutive victory, defeating Canada, Australia, and Cuba. The team has now advanced to the quarterfinals and is scheduled to play Japan at 1 a.m. Thursday (Aug. 22), Taipei time.
