TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The US Democratic Party reiterated its support for Taiwan in its 2024 party platform released on Monday (Aug. 19).
The party said President Joe Biden will continue to safeguard peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait under the US One China policy, which consists of the Taiwan Relations Act, the three Joint Communiques, and the Six Assurances. This is “to ensure that there are no unilateral changes to the status quo from either side,” it said.
The party also pledged “to invest in our alliances and partnerships” to deter Chinese coercion on regional neighbors or to undermine international rule of law.
Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said in a statement that the Democratic Party’s pro-Taiwan language reaffirms its support for the country and noted that this is the first time the platform mentions “maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait” and the “Six Assurances.”
Maintaining peace in the region has not only become a US priority but has also gradually become an international consensus in recent years, MOFA said.
The ministry said it will continue to work closely with friends from both the Democratic and Republican parties, as well as other sectors, to deepen Taiwan-US ties based on shared values.
Taiwan has sent a legislative delegation to observe the US Democratic National Convention (Aug. 19-22) in Chicago. The lawmakers will engage with Democrat politicians and government officials and enhance Taiwan-US relations.
Last month, Taiwan sent an 11-member delegation to observe the Republican National Convention held in Milwaukee.
