TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A massive steel beam fell off a flatbed truck on Tuesday (Aug. 20) leading to a full traffic closure from New Taipei to Taipei on the Zhongxiao Bridge.
At 6 a.m., the beam fell from the truck on Zhongshan Elevated Road on Provincial Highway 1 in New Taipei's Sanchong District, causing the guardrail to be damaged and leading to traffic congestion, per CNA. The route via the Zhongxiao Bridge is currently closed from Sanchong District to Taipei.
The New Taipei City Department of Transportation's Facebook page suggested motorists take alternate routes. Vehicles heading toward Taipei are advised to exit at the Zhonghua Road ramp and use local roads, taking the Zhongxing Bridge or Taipei Bridge instead.
The New Taipei City Fire Department's Facebook page reported that police are already on the scene diverting traffic.
Drivers traveling from New Taipei's Xinzhuang are advised to take the Chongxin Bridge toward Zhongxing Bridge to get to Taipei.
Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) said in response to the need for route changes, the timing of traffic lights at intersections around Taipei Bridge and Zhongxing Bridge has been adjusted, and additional police have been deployed at major junctions between the west side of Taipei and New Taipei to guide traffic.
