TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 6.3 earthquake rattled east Taiwan at 7:35 a.m. on Friday (Aug. 16), according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).
No injuries or damage from the earthquake were reported as of publication. Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7, which gauges the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location.
The quake’s intensity registered a 4 in Hualien County, Taitung County, Yilan County, Nantou County, Taichung, Chiayi County, Changhua County, and Yunlin County. An intensity level of 3 was recorded in Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Taoyuan, New Taipei, Chiayi, Kaohsiung, Hsinchu, and Tainan.
An intensity level of 2 was reported in Taipei, Keelung, Pingtung County, and Penghu County.
The CWA said its epicenter was 34.2 km southeast of Hualien County Hall, with a 9.7 km focal depth.
