TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A magnitude 5.7 earthquake rattled east Taiwan at 5:06 p.m. on Thursday (Aug. 15), according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA).
No injuries or damage from the earthquake were reported as of publication. Taiwan uses an intensity scale of 1 to 7, which gauges the degree to which a quake is felt at a specific location.
The quake’s intensity registered a 5 in Yilan County. An intensity level of 4 was recorded in Hualien County, Taoyuan, and New Taipei.
An intensity level of 3 was reported in Taichung, Nantou County, Taipei, Hsinchu County, and Miaoli County. An intensity level of 2 was measured in Keelung, Hsinchu, Changhua County, Yunlin County, Chiayi County, and Chiayi.
An intensity level of 1 was logged in Taitung County, Tainan, and Kaohsiung.
The CWA said its epicenter was 38.3 km south-southeast of Yilan County Hall, with a nine km focal depth.
