TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Inspired by the gold medal performance of Taiwan's badminton duo of Lee Yang (李洋) and Wang Chi-lin (王齊麟), a college student in Tainan has created portraits of them using hundreds of Rubik's Cubes.
Lee and Yang's victory at the Paris Olympics on Aug. 4 made them the first Taiwanese shuttlers to win back-to-back Olympic golds, earning them NT$50 million (US$1.5 million) in bonuses. A student at the National University of Tainan (NUTN) crafted portraits of them that received over 1,000 likes each from followers.
The Facebook page "Tainan Style" shared a time-lapse video of Instagram user Demogorgan (@__demogorgan), showing the creation process.
Tainan Style said the portraits were made by a student named Yao (姚) who used 786 Rubik's Cubes. The post quickly attracted widespread attention, garnering over 4,600 likes and 88,000 views within 11 hours.
On his own Instagram, Demogorgan shares mosaic portraits of celebrities such as K-pop stars Kim Ji-soo, Choi Seung-cheol, and Lalisa Manobal. He said at the top of his page that he hopes the celebrities will see the portraits for themselves one day.
