TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Guests who stay at one of Taichung’s 57 low-carbon hotels and bring their own toiletries and towels can receive discounts, the Taichung Tourism and Travel Bureau said Wednesday (Aug. 14).
The move comes as Taiwan prepares to place restrictions on single-use hotel items starting Jan. 1. The restrictions are aimed at reducing plastic waste and aligning with global sustainability efforts, per CNA.
Taichung is promoting sustainability by recognizing hotels that meet environmental standards. The city's low-carbon hotel initiative encourages the entire lodging sector to adopt eco-friendly practices.
There are currently 57 certified hotels in Taichung. Its tourism bureau plans to expand the program to include more similar hotels in the future.
The bureau encourages the public to experience green tourism in Taichung. The city's vibrant event calendar for the second half of the year kicked off with the Taichung Ocean Sightseeing Season, per Travel Taichung.
Other upcoming events include the Taichung Bicycle Carnival-Let's All Ride, Taichung International Dance Carnival, Taichung Comic Arts Festival, Red Bull Showrun Taichung, Taichung Hot Spring Season, and the Taichung International Flower Carpet Festival.
