TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Ministry of Education (MOE) said Monday (Aug. 12) that it has provided NT$1.58 billion (US$48.78 million) to 850 schools to create community reading stations.
The ministry seeks to promote a shared reading culture. To achieve this, the MOE's K-12 Education Administration has spearheaded the "School-Community Reading Station" project, per MOE.
The program encourages schools to transform libraries or vacant spaces into community reading hubs that reflect the school's identity. These spaces are designed to foster reading, learning, and community engagement through diverse activities for all ages.
Pingtung's Zhongzheng Elementary School transformed its history into a community reading station. Salvaged hinoki cypress wood from a demolished Japanese-era dormitory was repurposed for the station's signage, door handles, and windowsills, preserving the school's heritage.
The reading area's wooden bookshelves and floors evoke a cozy atmosphere, while the audiovisual zone's metallic accents and space-themed decor create a futuristic contrast. This unique blend attracts visitors across generations through diverse programming, including overnight stays and family reading events.
