TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A medical team from Taiwan’s Chia-yi Christian Hospital partnered with Thailand’s McCormick Hospital for a three-day medical mission in the remote northern Thai village of Arunothai that began Friday (Aug. 9).
Arunothai, home to the largest Chinese community in the region, lacks adequate medical resources and is relatively isolated with a diverse population, according to CNA. The Thai government has designated it a self-governing area.
Eight hundred and fifty villagers received care during the mission. The villagers expressed deep gratitude for the hospitals’ efforts in addressing their critical healthcare needs.
The joint effort marked the third such mission since 2017. The first took place in 2017, followed by another after the easing of the COVID-19 pandemic in August 2023.
Chiayi Christian Hospital Deputy Superintendent Liu Chung-hsien (劉中賢) said five villagers were diagnosed with atrial fibrillation and given medication. Two other patients, one with suspected severe tuberculosis and another with necrotizing fasciitis, were transported to a hospital for emergency care.
The medical team also provided health screenings, education, and home visits.
Liu introduced a scholarship program to over a hundred middle school students through the local Enhui Middle School. He informed the students about opportunities to study nursing in Thailand or Taiwan.
