TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) caucus leader Wu Szu-Yao (吳思瑤) called on the Chinese government to withdraw a demand for Taiwan to accept the “one China” principle.
The Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR) government has requested that the local Taipei Economic and Cultural Office sign a "one China” commitment letter to station new diplomatic personnel, CNA reported. Taiwan has refused, resulting in a diplomat being unable to receive the proper visa to enter the SAR.
In response, Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) is considering closing the office or hiring local staff to handle consular affairs, similar to Taiwan’s office in Hong Kong.
Wu expressed regret over China’s demand and emphasized that Taiwan and China are not subordinate to each other. It is neither appropriate nor acceptable for any diplomatic personnel to sign such a commitment set by the Chinese Communist Party, she said.
Wu said this political coercion would negatively impact services for Taiwanese citizens and expatriates in Macau and hinder exchanges between Taiwan and Macau. She hoped that the situation would not lead to the office closing.
