TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) and Ko Wen-je (柯文哲), party chair, issued statements on Sunday (Aug. 11) to inform the public of issues regarding campaign financing in the recent election.
The announcement did not disclose details regarding potential violations but said the party will hold a press conference on Monday (Aug. 12) afternoon to address any questions. Ko was expected to join a public event with the press on Saturday (Aug. 10) but abruptly canceled only one hour before his expected appearance, reported CNA.
Ko was recently criticized for allegedly making false declarations concerning campaign donations while running for the presidency. After several days of criticism and media speculation, Ko admitted there were some flaws in his official campaign contribution declarations in December and January.
There are also questions concerning a fundraising concert organized by the campaign, which resulted in a substantial profit for the TPP, reported CNA.
Ko said that an investigation will be undertaken to clarify these matters. A UDN report suggests that Ko canceled his plans over the weekend because accountants are reviewing account records and donations to prepare an explanation for the public.
The TPP press conference is planned for 2 p.m. on Monday (Aug .12) at the National Taiwan University Alumni Hall. Ko along with other senior party officials, including his campaign director Huang Shan-shan (黃珊珊), Deputy Director Chen Zhi-han (陳智菡), and Chief Financial Officer Li Wen-zong (李文宗), will speak to the press and answer questions about the campaign’s financial discrepancies.
