TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) praised Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting (林郁婷) for her historic boxing win at the Olympics early Sunday morning (Aug. 11).
Lin nabbed gold for women’s featherweight boxing—Taiwan’s first—after beating Poland’s Julia Szeremata by unanimous decision. In a Facebook post, Lai called Lin “truly remarkable” and said all Taiwanese are “incredibly proud” of her. He commended her for showing tenacity and proving her strength to the world.
Although Lin faced controversy over her gender, the president said Taiwan stood united and supported through the whole ordeal, refusing the boxer to become a target of fake news. “Thank you for showcasing Taiwan’s spirit of confidence and resilience to the world and bringing glory to our nation!” Lai said.
Lin beat Uzbekistan's Sitora Turdibekova, Bulgaria's Svetlana Staneva Kamenova, and Turkey's Esra Yildiz Kahraman to reach the final.
The boxer was disqualified from last year’s International Boxing Association (IBA) world championships after failing a test where "the specifics remain confidential,” according to an IBA statement. Taiwan plans to take legal action against the association for making false accusations over Lin’s gender.
It will discuss with the International Olympic Committee how to proceed once the Olympics conclude.
