TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Lin Yu-ting (林郁婷) made history for Taiwan on Sunday (Aug. 11), winning the gold medal in the women’s 57kg boxing category at the Paris Olympics.
Lin defeated Poland’s Julia Szeremeta by unanimous decision, taking all three rounds. The victory marks Taiwan’s first Olympic boxing gold.
Lin dominated in her four fights on the way to winning the Olympic final. She won by unanimous decision against Uzbekistan's Sitora Turdibekova, Bulgaria's Svetlana Staneva Kamenova, and Turkey's Esra Yildiz Kahraman.
Lin, who has competed in women’s boxing since middle school, became embroiled in a gender controversy. She was disqualified from last year’s International Boxing Association (IBA) world championships after failing a test where "the specifics remain confidential,” according to a statement the IBA released July 31.
After getting the decision, Lin knelt in the ring and kissed the canvas, then paid tribute to her coach Tseng Tzu-chiang (曾自強). Szeremeta showed good sportsmanship, making a heart gesture to the crowd, and congratulated Lin as the Taiwan fighter held the ropes so she could leave the ring.
