TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — National icon and international drag artist Nymphia Wind (妮妃雅‧瘋) celebrated Taiwan at the Paris Olympics with a captivating performance in which she dressed up as the god Matsu.
Social media lit up with reviews of the show on Friday (Aug. 9), in which Nymphia regaled the audience with traditional Taiwanese songs. Known for telling it straight, she also addressed the deadnaming of Taiwan as Chinese Taipei at the Olympics by saying:
"Let's put this out there: I know it says Chinese Taipei, but in my world, it says Taiwan."
The winner of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” was also quoted by CNA as saying, "It means a lot to me to be able to represent Taiwan in a foreign country."
Accompanied by her Haus of Wind team, this included DJ Elvis Lin, TAI Body Theatre, DJ Swallow, and Les Petites Choses Production, according to the Ministry of Culture. The show, titled “Formosa Follies” as a tribute to Paris’ Folies Bergere cabaret, was held at the Taiwan Pavilion in Parc de la Villette. It closes to the public Saturday (Aug. 10).
The Ministry of Culture said it organized the event to pay tribute to Olympic athletes. The Cultural Olympiad is an artistic program on the Olympic sidelines that also saw Taipei Puppet Theater showcase traditional Beiguan music and temple fair culture earlier in the week.
Nymphia, also known as the “Banana Queen” or “Banana Buddha,” was praised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for celebrating Taiwan’s openness, inclusivity, and diversity: “The Haus of Wind slays.”
