TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — An exhibition opened Tuesday (Aug. 6) at the Kaohsiung Music Center to celebrate the city’s vibrant show business past.
The “Dance for You, Sing for You” show recreates the iconic Sapphire Cabaret with historic items and costumes. Tickets to recent Sapphire Cabaret-themed concerts offer free admission, per CNA.
Established in 1975, the Sapphire Cabaret was the coveted stage for up-and-coming singers. There was a widely held belief that success in the music industry hinged on a Sapphire performance, per CNA.
Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai (陳其邁) expressed his admiration for the Sapphire Cabinet, saying that it had nurtured countless talented entertainers. He described the exhibition as a "time machine.”
The rise of cable TV and looser government rules in the 1980s hurt the cabaret business. Entertainers shifted to variety shows, while cabarets struggled with repetitive acts and fading star power.
The exhibition features eight interview segments, 11 sets of iconic stage costumes, and over 100 pieces of memorabilia from the cabaret’s heyday. It offers visitors a unique opportunity to relive the vibrant and glamorous era of the Sapphire Cabaret.
