TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting (林郁婷) defeated Turkey's Esra Yildiz Kahraman by unanimous decision Thursday (Aug. 8), becoming Taiwan's first boxer to reach the Olympic finals.
Lin, who has competed in women’s boxing since middle school, became embroiled in a gender controversy. She was disqualified from last year’s International Boxing Association (IBA) world championships after failing a test where "the specifics remain confidential,” according to a statement the IBA released July 31.
Lin utilized her height advantage and a defensive counterpunching style throughout the game. She countered Kahraman's advances and maintained her distance.
Dominating all three rounds, Lin became the first Taiwanese to secure a spot in the Olympic boxing finals, per CNA.
