TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — On Tuesday (Aug. 6) Elon Musk abruptly canceled a promotion offering Teslas for sale at Costco Taiwan stores.
On Monday (Aug. 5), Tesla and Costco Taiwan kicked off a sales drive that was to last until Aug. 18, per UDN. Tesla vehicles went on sale at seven stores across Taiwan including in Neihu, Zhonghe, Zhongli, Nantun (Taichung), Chiayi, and Dashu (Kaohsiung).
The models on display were the Model 3 and Model Y RWD rear-wheel drive models, priced at NT$1.69 million (US$51,000) and NT$1.73 million, respectively. These prices matched those on Tesla's official website.
Initially, it was reported that the promotion included a NT$3,000 window tinting voucher, an NT$10,000 Costco e-commerce discount voucher, and an additional offer for those who purchased a car before Aug. 15, allowing them to choose one of three charging perks (5,000 km of free supercharge mileage, a Type 2 charging kit for travel, or a home wall-mounted charging equipment installation plan), along with an exclusive summer accessory package.
On Tuesday, X user Farzad shared a post announcing the promotion and suggested that Tesla would trial this sales channel before bringing it to the U.S. However, less than 20 minutes later, Musk wrote on Farzad's post, “I just canned this program. Was not approved.”
At 3 p.m., Costco Taiwan also said “the event ends today, thank you for your support," per NowNews. A reporter from the news agency observed that at the Costco in Zhonghe, Tesla vehicles continued to be on display on Wednesday (Aug. 7).
According to store staff, more than one Tesla had been sold after the display began on Tuesday, with buyers purchasing not only from the Zhonghe store but also from other Costco locations in New Taipei City.
