TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A large tortoise was found wandering the streets of Taipei, police said Saturday (Aug. 3).
The African spurred tortoise startled passersby before being captured by police. The tortoise’s owner later arrived and claimed the pet.
The reptile is native to Africa. They can grow up to 75 cm long and weigh as much as 50 kg.
The import of African spurred tortoises into Taiwan has been illegal for more than a decade. Police said they are a popular pet.
Given their substantial size and specialized care needs, potential owners should carefully consider their ability to provide an appropriate environment for these animals.
The Wenshan First Police Precinct advised prospective pet owners to thoroughly research the species and ensure they can meet the tortoise's specific requirements. They also emphasized the importance of acquiring pets through legal channels and taking preventative measures to avoid loss.
