TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan's badminton duo of Lee Yang (李洋) and Wang Chi-lin (王齊麟) is expected to receive over NT$50 million (US$1.5 million) in bonuses for capturing the gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
According to Taiwan's medal award system, athletes who win an Olympic gold medal will receive an NT$20 million bonus from the Ministry of Education's Sports Administration. Lee and Wang are also going to receive additional bonuses exceeding NT$5 from their local governments, raising each shuttler's total winnings to over NT$25 million, per CTS News.
Following the duo's historic repeat gold medal win over China on Sunday (Aug. 4), Kinmen Magistrate Chen Fu-hai (陳福海) announced that Lee, a Kinmen resident, will receive an additional bonus of NT$5.5 million. This includes an NT$3 million gold medal bonus, an NT$100,000 national team member bonus, and an NT$50,000 four-year monthly training subsidy, bringing Lee's combined awards to NT$25.5 million.
On Sunday, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) on Facebook noted that Kinmen was giving Lee an NT$5.5 bonus and said that he would increase the city's bonus for Wang, a Taipei native, to match that of Lee. Initially, Taipei was offering Wang an NT$2 million gold medal bonus and NT$730,000 in subsidies.
On Monday (Aug. 4), Chiang posted a video call with Wang on Instagram, informing the athlete the city would provide him with an additional special bonus of NT$3 million for winning consecutive gold medals. This brought the total awards from Taipei to NT$5.73 million and combined awards to NT$25.73 million.
Chiang said additional bonuses would be given to the badminton duo's “hardworking coaches behind the scenes.”
