TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Cooperation between Taiwan and Guatemala is expanding, Taiwan Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) said on Monday (Aug. 5) during a meeting with Guatemala Vice Foreign Minister Julio Eduardo Orozco Perez.
Lin said the Taiwanese government is formulating cooperation plans based on the policy priorities of Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo, according to Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). These plans include introducing textile and circular economy industry chains for investment and integrating smart technology into Guatemala's agricultural production. There are also talks to establish bilateral carbon credit trading strategies to promote mutual benefits for the private sectors of both nations, Lin said.
Lin thanked the Guatemalan government's steadfast support in helping Taiwan participate in international organizations such as the World Health Assembly.
Orozco conveyed Arevalo and Foreign Minister Carlos Martinez’s commitment to strengthening Taiwan-Guatemala relations. He also thanked Lin for Taiwan’s help in combatting Chinese economic coercion against Guatemala. The vice minister hoped that future economic and trade exchanges and talent development would continue to deepen the friendly ties between the two countries.
Orozco landed in Taiwan on Monday (Aug. 5) for a five-day visit. In addition to meeting with Taiwan government officials, he is scheduled to visit the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Central American Bank for Economic Integration's Taiwan office.
This visit will provide the vice minister an opportunity to gain a firsthand understanding of Taiwan’s industrial development and enhance awareness of Guatemala's investment environment among various sectors in Taiwan, MOFA said.
