TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The military announced on Monday (Aug. 5) that it will hold live-fire artillery exercises in northern and central Taiwan later this week.
Taiwan’s Third Theater of Operations, responsible for northern Taiwan's defense, will conduct drills at the Keng Zikou shooting range in Hsinchu from Aug. 7-8, CNA reported. It will deploy 102 artillery pieces, including M110 self-propelled howitzers. Exercises will include using drones for surveillance and firing various types of shells.
The Fifth Theater of Operations, responsible for the defense of central Taiwan, will also conduct live-fire drills on Aug. 7 near the Dajia River in Taichung. The military set a maximum trajectory height of 4,000 feet and established a danger zone with a radius of 5.55 kilometers. Though no specific equipment was listed, self-propelled and traditional howitzers are likely to be used.
The drills come less than two weeks after the military concluded its annual Han Kuang exercise on July 26. This year’s exercise focused on realistic combat scenarios and decentralized command. It also honed soldiers’ familiarity with updated rules of engagement and nighttime operations.
