TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Pingtung is upgrading a key harbor to accommodate the growing numbers of tourists and support the local fishing industry.
Annual ferry passenger numbers from the Houbihu fishing harbor to Lanyu have exceeded 50,000. The Pingtung County Government said it is hoping to improve the harbor.
The previous setup had caused issues such as traffic congestion, inadequate parking, and conflicts with the local fishing community. The county government has initiated enhancements to balance the needs of the tourism and fishing industries.
Enhancements
- Building a new passenger waiting area: The new waiting area will be near the fisheries association building, providing easier access and ample parking
- Building a new ice plant: This facility will support the local fishing industry
- Creating additional fishing jetties: Two new jetties will be built to compensate the fishing community for any disruptions caused by the harbor improvements
A visitor from Taichung praised the convenience of the trip from the harbor to Lanyu and the beautiful scenery along the way.
Pingtung County Magistrate Chou Chun-mi (周春米) emphasized the importance of these improvements, stating that the new facilities will provide a more comfortable and enjoyable experience. Chou also highlighted the county's commitment to supporting the local economy and tourism.
