TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Ships have been sent to Taiwan’s east coast to ferry passengers and vehicles between areas cut off in Typhoon Gaemi.
The ships New Taima, Penghu, and Kai Shiuan No. 1 are ferrying people and vehicles between ports in southern Yilan and Hualien, the transport ministry said on Monday (July 29). The ministry said ships are being used as road and rail systems have not yet been fully restored after typhoon damage, per CNA.
The Penghu and Kai Shiuan No. 1 combined can carry about 860 passengers and 100 cars, the ministry said. It also said that by Monday the New Taima had carried 1,975 passengers and 209 vehicles between ports in Suao and Hualien, relieving pressure on the eastern route.
The Penghu has been rerouted from servicing travel between Kaohsiung and Penghu’s Magong Port. The transport ministry said extra ships have been scheduled to service that route, and subsidies will be available for passengers required to reschedule trips because of the changes.
The New Taima ordinarily transports passengers, cargo, and vehicles between Keelung Port and Matsu Islands. After Wednesday (July 31) the New Taima will no longer service the east coast route and the Penghu and Kai Shiuan No. 1 will remain on until at least Saturday (Aug. 3).
Those seeking passage on the ships can register on the transport ministry’s official Line accounts between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on working days. Only bookings for the next day will be accepted, the ministry said.
