TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taiwan Coast Guard continued its search on Friday (July 26) for crew members of the Fu Shun cargo ship that sank off the coast of Kaohsiung on Thursday (July 25) due to Typhoon Gaemi.
Five other ships ran aground in southern Taiwan due to the storm, but their crews were reported safe and there was no immediate danger of fuel leakages. The Tanzanian-flagged Fu Shun was carrying nine crew members from Myanmar when it sank about 35 km from Taiwan's coast.
The Fu-Shun began to list around 5:45 a.m. on Thursday, and was sunk by 6:45 a.m. When an aerial survey was conducted at the site there was no sign of the Burmese crew.
According to reports, four of the crew members were rescued, while one was found dead on a Kaohsiung beach. Four others remain missing at sea, reported UDN.
By Thursday evening, three of the nine crew members had been found on shore by local residents in Linyuan District, Kaohsiung, per LTN. An additional crew member was found by the coast guard overnight.
On Friday morning, the body of a 64-year-old man identified as the Fu Shun’s captain was found on a beach in Linyuan District around 6 a.m., reported Up Media. The man appeared to have been critically injured by strong waves along the rocky shore, but the precise cause of his death is under investigation.
