TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — World Table Tennis announced the Paris Olympics draw on Thursday (July 25), revealing Cheng I-ching (鄭怡靜) will face off against the winner of the preliminary round.
The Olympic table tennis matches are set to begin on Saturday (July 27), per CNA. Thursday's draw determined the matchups, with six female players competing in a preliminary round to secure a spot in the main draw of 64.
As the seventh seed, Cheng will likely face South Korea’s Jeon Ji-hee (田志希) in the top 16 if she performs as expected. If Cheng advances, she has a high chance of meeting the top seed, China's Sun Yingsha (孫穎莎), in the quarterfinals.
Coach Zheng Jia-qi (鄭佳奇) said the draw looks quite favorable. The Taiwanese players are in a positive mindset and are ready to showcase their training.
Zheng said regardless of the opponent, “We will stick to our planned tactics. As long as the players perform well on the spot, our chances are good.”
Meanwhile, Lin Yun-ju (林昀儒) will face off against Puerto Rico's Brian Afanador in his first match, per Liberty Times. He may then face third seed Felix Lebrun from France or Germany’s Dimitrij Ovtcharov.
