TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Typhoon Gaemi claimed its first fatality in Taiwan when a falling tree hit a woman passing by on a scooter in Kaohsiung City, reports said Wednesday (July 24).
The Central Emergency Operation Center put the death toll from the storm at one, with 58 injured, the Liberty Times reported. The fatality was a woman aged around 70 who had been riding a scooter in Kaohsiung’s Fengshan District when a tree fell on top of her. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
At 2:30 p.m., the Central Emergency Operation Center counted 962 instances of disaster across the country, including 458 fallen trees and 68 fallen signboards. The power supply was reported lost to 131,625 households, while 22 locations had reported flooding.
In a preventive move, 4,018 people had been evacuated from their homes, and 386 individuals had been moved into 34 shelters. The evacuations mainly helped residents of areas threatened to be cut off from the outside by flooding or landslides.
Looking at the rainfall between the start of Tuesday and 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Central Emergency Operation Center said Mount Taiping in Yilan County received 503 millimeters of rain, followed by Nanhuquan Valley in Taichung City with 346.5 mm, and Lalashan in Taoyuan City with 309.5 mm.
By 4 p.m. Wednesday, Gaemi was situated 70 km south-southeast of Yilan and moving northwest at a speed decreasing from 23 km per hour to 15 kph, the Central Weather Administration said.
Landfall on the east coast is expected during Wednesday evening. Gaemi is likely to move across the north of the country from east to west overnight, and to enter the Taiwan Strait early Thursday (July 25).
