TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Weather Administration (CWA) said Wednesday (July 24) Typhoon Gaemi’s storm circle has covered most of eastern Taiwan and will make landfall in the evening.
According to the CWA, as of 6 a.m., Typhoon Gaemi's center was approximately 240 km southeast of Yilan, per CNA. Gaemi is moving northwest-westward at 11 to 16 km/h, CWA said.
The weather administration said localized heavy rain or extremely heavy rain is expected in New Taipei, Taoyuan, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Taitung County’s mountainous areas, Chiayi County plains, Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung County. It issued extremely heavy rain advisories for Taichung, Nantou County, Yunlin County, Chiayi County, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung County, and Yilan County.
The CWA also issued heavy rain advisories in the mountainous areas of Taichung, Nantou County, Yunlin County, Chiayi County, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung County, and Yilan County.
The CWA issued advisories for landslides, rockfalls, mudslides, and flash floods. Low-lying coastal areas should watch out for flooding and the public should avoid activities in mountain or river areas, it said.
CWA forecaster Liu Yu-chi (劉宇其) said in a press conference that the most severe winds and rains are expected late tonight after landfall, continuing until the daytime on Thursday (July 25). They will gradually diminish as Gaemi moves away from Taiwan by Friday (July 26), he added.
